Jet Summer '13 Media Launch

Summer 2013 colour comes into its own with the season easily likened to a photo opportunity of individual expression. Formalwear through to street sensibility sees a common thread of inspired modern lines and a new take on classic looks injected with attitude. Fluorescent coloured stripes through to tie-dye inspirations and bright or pastel solids paired with funky checks. At times rugged and at others pure fashion forward, Denim also plays a starring role this season.

“Stripes continue to make a comeback this season,” says Jet general manager for adult buying Marina de Wet, “whether the look is boldly drawn or paired with a solid pastel or bright, stripes lead this summer’s wardrobe.” De Wet adds that for women bold graphic prints, slight oriental styling and monochrome colour play also add to daytime fun. “Simplicity continues to add panache to summer nights with black and gold dust at cocktail time.” Denim rounds the look and blue remains the dominant colour.

Suave high street savvy signals a season of smart casual and formal men’s wear as comfortable in the office as at the opera. “Lounge shirts with contrasting button runways and collars revisits vintage New York with waistcoats rounding off formalwear this year,” says De Wet. The college look still dominates casuals but this year it’s paired with a soupcon of hip-hop street-smart and bold, jumbo stripes and checks. “Underpinning Summer 2013 is individual character. Mix, match and make a statement; whether subtle or seriously loud.”

Teen fashion can be encapsulated in a single term, Summer Funk. Jet buying executive for children’s wear Achim Kunkel says that denim; loud pinks, prints, polka dots and stripes are this season’s hottest tickets for girls. “Checks, bright solids, denim and prints brim with attitude for young men paired with jumbo stripes in heavy contrasts,” says Kunkel. “It’s about looking amazing from head to toe, inspired by music and celebrity, a look that is cute and edgy at the same time.” Denim chambrays with striped tees over funky shorts spell Summer Funk and sensibility.

Kunkel says that pre-school fashion follows a similar storyboard with garments washed in bright colours, checks, solids and cuteness. “It’s about fun, being active in the summer and the exuberance of youth,” adds Kunkel.
