Sympathetic pregnancy, also known as ‘Couvade syndrome’ or CS, is the name given to the situation where a healthy man experiences symptoms similar to pregnancy at the time when his wife is expecting. Although a lot has been written about it, the subject is shrouded in mystery. This is due to the fact that it is not formally recognised as a mental or physical illness. There is also the problem that not many men are willing to report or talk about it, making research on the subject difficult. For this reason, it is also not clear whether CS is a psychological or physical phenomenon.
