Now that you’ve decided to try for a baby, before contacting a gynaecologist we suggest that you tick these off your to-do list for a worry-free pregnancy.
Congratulations on your decision to have a baby! Before you get carried away by everything pregnancy-related, make sure that you take care of the list of things we’re about to mention below:
1. Review Your Medicine
Some medications can be harmful to your baby, so tell your doctor about any pills or medication that you’re taking or have taken recently so that they can tell you how to handle your medical care from now on.
2. Up Your Folic Acid Intake
Every woman of child-bearing age should be taking folic acid, regardless of whether or not you are planning a pregnancy. Some pregnancies are unplanned and this important B-vitamin offers an umbrella of protection in the first trimester. It lowers the risk of neural tube birth defects, such as spina bifida, which form very early in the foetus. Your doctor will advice you to take a lot of spinach and other leafy greens to make sure that you get enough of it.
3. Weigh Yourself
Being underweight can affect ovulation, while being overweight can put you at risk of high blood pressure and diabetes. Being the right weight also means you will be in better shape after the baby comes.
4. Visit The Dentist
How long have you been putting off your visit to the dentist? Well, it’s time! Bad oral health can put you at risk of bacterial infections, which can lead to preeclampsia.
Get all your home renovations out of the way before you start working on making a baby. Some paint, furniture polish, pesticides and harsh cleaners contain chemicals that have been linked to birth defects. The fumes are poisonous, so go on and settle everything that needs to be taken care of now before baby makes three.
