Have you ever thought about what popular entertainment is teaching our sons? What makes one a real hero, fighting alone or in a team, maybe led by strong women?
When you’re sitting with your child watching a movie, do you ever look at them and wonder just what messages they are taking in? Little boys grow up believing that after slaying the dragon or warding off all the evil, they will walk away with the girl, no questions asked. Colin Stokes, director of communications for the non-profit Citizen Schools, says it’s time dads redefined the meaning of manhood to their sons.
He says, “Show them how a real man is someone who trusts his sisters and respects them, and wants to be on their team to protect them from the bad guys who are men who want to abuse them.” So next time you sit down to watch a movie with your son, seek out one with female heroines, let him identify them and encourage him to fight on their side. After all, wouldn’t you rather have a son who champions the cause of others than one who acts gung-ho on his own?
