What Are The Best Interdental Tools For Kids?

Updated: Apr 10, 2020

Dirna Grobbelaar, Ivohealth’s Oral Hygiene Advisor, provides a guide on which tools work well and when to use them.

There are a huge variety of flossing and interdental tools available. Ask the dentist or oral hygienist for advice or try a few and see what suits you, your child and your child’s mouth.

  1. Start cleaning in-between once the teeth start to touch, usually around age two to six years. At this age it’s best to floss your child’s teeth, as they don’t have the manual dexterity. Floss on a handle makes it much easier – try Sunstar GUM Easy Flossers or the Flosbrush Automatic.

  2. From around 8 years onwards children are becoming more independent and might prefer to do it themselves. Try Sunstar GUM Soft-Picks, Trav-Lers (just make sure you get the right size), Easy Flossers or the Flosbrush Automatic.

  3. At around age 12 children usually have their permanent teeth and are more likely to be able to floss or clean unsupervised, using either string floss or one of the interdental tools.

  4. If child needs orthodontic braces use Sunstar GUM Ortho Floss, which is especially designed to clean between the teeth and around the brackets. The Panasonic Oral Irrigator or Philips Sonicare AirFloss are other good options.

  5. Tip: Check how well your child cleans in-between with Sunstar GUM’s Red-Cote Disclosing Tablet Simply chew and see where plaque has been left behind.
